How Zoolander Can Help You Stop Being In A Crappy Relationship With Your Business

How can I be in relationship with my work with ease and kindness toward myself and my business?

This is the question I’ve been asking myself this week…when I remember to…because in the past, I’ve sometimes had a crappy relationship with my business that made me want to ignore it, hate it, and pretend it was dead.

But last night, after talking with Giovanni, I discovered the perfect answer to this question.

How can I be in relationship with my work with ease and kindness toward myself and my business???

(It has to do with the movie Zoolander and the 80′s song Ben Stiller got programmed to…)

It’s all about RELAXING.

Being tense, and tensing up is the only reason I’ve ever *not* liked working and being in relationship with my business…

So…

Take the lyrics from Frankie Goes To Hollywood:

Relax don’t do it
When you want to go to it
Relax don’t do it

If ever I don’t know what to do…relaxing is a good place to start.

Before I start working on something…relaxing is a good idea.

When I’m planning things for the business…doing it while I’m relaxed is better than doing it when I’m tense.

(As Jack Black would say, “See? It’s feckin’ simple.”)

What’s the point in doing something if I’m tense and not relaxed?

And I’m not talking about relaxing like falling into a deep meditation or anything…

But relaxing into what’s in front of me.

Getting present by relaxing into the now – into the moment.

I’ve been practicing this since last night…

Woke up this morning focusing on being relaxed about what I’m doing…

And no matter what I’m doing, even if I’m excitedly saying hello to the dog in the morning…I can do it while being relaxed.

Because the relaxation I’m talking about and experiencing is about being present with myself.

It’s about actually *being* in my moment. Relaxing into me.

It’s really quite nice.

And I love how it’s just a simple instruction to myself: Relax.

That’s really all I have to do to. And everything else is going to flow out of that.

So get ready, Business. I am relaxed and ready to spend some time with you.

This is a good reminder for me to slow down! When I try and do too much (like this week–ugh), I end up tense, irritated, and unable to access my creativity. I need more project play time instead of project management time.

Oh yeah…Tension = creativity blocker for sure. Good one.

How can creativity come through when I’m tense, not breathing fully, thinking about the future or worrying about the past? All symptoms of being tense.

Love that you’re going to see about giving yourself more project PLAY time.

I am tense and wound up all the time. I definitely need to take Frankie’s advice and start relaxing. Although I may have to download the song and dance around first then relax.

@Shawna Totally! Get the song. That’d be fun. And ya know, we can be relaxed AND be dancing. I’ve come to see that relaxing is not just something that happens with eyes closed and completely still bodies. Though, that of course feels really nice. But even when we’re working we can be relaxed. When we’re exercising, dancing, driving, talking with others. I see relaxing as like Allowing. It’s really being with what’s going on right now. Not being in the past or future – mentally. Just being with what I’m doing.

Sometimes I name things around me to help me come to the present and be with it. Plant. Jeans. Blanket. Floor. Carpet. Just grounds me to what is really here and I can relax into that. Takes my mind from wherever it may have been and brings it to me. Right now. A relaxed mind is just here.
